Upskilling Sustainable Farming Rudiments Under Climate Transformation (USUFRUCT)
The Upskilling Sustainable Farming Rudiments Under Climate Transformation (USUFRUCT) Project empowers smallholder farmers especially women in the Bawku West District to adopt climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices. By promoting composting, soil and water conservation, tree growing, and integrated soil fertility management, the project enhances food security and household incomes while protecting the environment. Through training women extension volunteers, improving access to productive lands, and supporting gender equity and Village savings initiatives, IDEAS Ghana is capacitating communities to build resilience and sustainable livelihoods in the face of climate change.

Improved Nutritional Security and household Resilience
This Project, implemented by IDEAS Ghana under the Feed the Future Resilience in Northern Ghana Systems Strengthening Activity, supports women of reproductive age and children under five in 20 communities across the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West Region. The project focuses on improving nutrition, food security, and intensification of climate-smart agriculture practices, dry season gardening and poultry production and consumption. The initiative in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Ghana Health Service, and local stakeholders supported small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to supply nutritious food to local markets and promotes the consumption of animal-source foods to combat malnutrition. IDEAS Ghana built stronger, self-reliant communities that better withstand the challenges of food insecurity and climate shocks.

The 2E-FILS Project supports elderly smallholder farmers in the Bawku West District to enhance their livelihoods and food security through poultry production and consumption. IDEAS Ghana is promoting Orange Flesh Sweet Potatoes production and consumption aimed at enhancing resilience and economic empowerment of smallholder women farmers. IDEAS Ghana is responding to the growing challenges of climate change, low soil fertility, and food insecurity which exacerbate issues of malnutrition among children leading their poor health and low educational outcomes. IDEAS Ghana pilot project focuses on organic production, processing, preservation, storage and consumption of Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potatoes (OFSP). The initiative hopes to serves as climate-smart agricultural practices, fostering women’s empowerment, sustainable nutrition for children and vulnerable, and improving incomes.
The Women Agriculture Extension Volunteers (WAEV) approach is an initiative of IDEAS Ghana as an innovative and community-driven strategy to bridge the agricultural extension service gap in rural farming communities. The WAEVs are selected by their respective commth unities, trained and equipped to serve as community-based agricultural extension agents. These trainings not only strengthen their technical and leadership skills but also empower them socially and economically to serve as role models within their communities. These volunteers act as the points of contact between farmers and agricultural service providers, ensuring that vital knowledge and practices reach even the most remote farming households. The Women Agricultural Extension Volunteers carry out a range of activities in their respective communities to include the promotion of climate-smart agriculture as the main role. They also play an active role in mobilizing farmers for training sessions, facilitating farmer group meetings, and linking farmers to relevant institutions and markets.
